AVISTA Studies in the History of Medieval Science, Technology and Art has been created to publish, in the first instance, the interdisciplinary, refereed papers generated from and stimulated by AVISTA-sponsored sessions held annually at the Medieval Institute at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo.
Over the past decade, AVISTA members have organized a series of thematically related sessions at Kalamazoo devoted to topics ranging from medieval military technology, the cloth industry, the resources of wood and stone, medieval medicine to the mechanical arts, Ars Quadratum. These sessions, a number of which have been generously (but not exclusively) sponsored by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation in North America, have generated a considerable audience and have thus created the impetus for the formation of the present Series organized by the efforts of the AVISTA Board and John Smedley of Ashgate Press.
