Team Photo Spring 2008

  • Rugby is played by all shapes and sizes. Unlike any other sport, the way the game is designed you need players of all shapes and sizes to be a successful rugby team. Short, tall, fat, stout, quick, thin and everything in between. The idea that you need to be tall, beefy and huge to play rugby is a myth.
  • We'll teach you how to play. We understand that rugby is a "cult sport" in America, and we don't expect you to know how to play. We'll show you the ropes.
  • You don't need to be a great athlete to play. We have an opinion on our team that everyone who participates in practice will get playing time. We have a spring tournament season where we promise EVERYONE play time on the field EVERY WEEK. In the fall, during our competitive season, we can't promise you'll play every week, but you'll definitely see the field during the season no matter what your skill level.
  • Rugby isn't necessarily the violent and dangerous sport it is made out to be. While it's true that there is a lot of rough and dirty play in professional European men's leagues, we are playing in a much tamer women's collegiate club league. Needless to say, this is a tackling sport so you will still have to expect big hits and some injuries. Don't worry about being "tough enough" to play. We'll help you get that confidence.
  • Rugby is a social sport. One of our team mottos is "Saturday is a rugby day!" One of the reasons we say this is because the day doesn't end after the game. Rugby is famous for a long held tradition called an "after-match." An after-match is hosted by the home team. Both teams and the officials are invited to the after-match where there is food, beer and a lot of fun. While the two teams may be tough rivals on the field, there is no animosity at the after-match.

If you are interested in hearing more about joining one of the state's best rugby teams (with no pressure to join) please e-mail uwwwomensrugby@yahoo.com. Please leave your name and contact information and we'll get back to you ASAP. We are very welcoming of new recruits.

So you're thinking about joining rugby…If you didn't play the game in high school, you probably have a lot of questions. Don't worry! At one time even the world's greatest rugby players were in your position. Here are a couple of things about rugby that will ease you nerves and will help you realize rugby is one of the greatest sports on Earth.
